The word lawyer comes from French and means “one appointed or constituted”, and the original meaning of the word is that of a person acting on behalf of another as agent or assistant. Both an attorney and an attorney can provide legal advice, but only a person who has passed the bar exam (an attorney) can represent a client in court.
